ttok 1.0 simonwillison.net

Release: ttok 1.0 I released ttok 0.4 , ran uv tool upgrade ttok , piped a file into the new version… and realized that it was defaulting to the GPT-4 tokenizer when it should very clearly default to GPT-5/GPT-6 instead! I figured switching the default was a reasonable excuse to finally ship a 1.0. OpenAI haven’t actually confirmed that GPT-6 uses the same tokenizer as the GPT-5 family yet - there’s an angry issue about it - but I found this commit by William Liu which reports on an experimen…

ttok 0.4 simonwillison.net

Release: ttok 0.4 ttok is my CLI tool for counting tokens, using OpenAI’s open source tiktoken library. It hasn’t been in updated in a couple of years, but I finally fixed a Click warning, updated CI, and added a —list-models command to list available models. It works with uvx , so you can count tokens in anything like this: cat file.txt | uvx ttok Tags: projects , ai , openai , generative-ai , llms , tokenization

GitHub issue openai/tiktoken#608 github.com

Update for gpt-6 models… GPT-6 Astra has been available for nearly three weeks and tiktoken 0.14.0 still raises KeyError on encoding_for_model(‘gpt-6-sol’). This delay is inexcusable.

OpenAI — Introducing gpt-oss openai.com

gpt-oss models use o200k_harmony, a 201,088-token extension of o200k_base that adds special tokens ( , , , , ) for the Harmony response format.

oh-my-pi harmony docs (GitHub) github.com

Early releases of the tiktoken o200k_harmony extension assign the same ID (200018) to both and , a duplicate-ID bug that must be manually patched in custom inference loops.

OrcaRouter — GPT-6 Sol vs GPT-5.6 Sol orcarouter.ai

GPT-6 Sol uses ~31k tokens per task versus 29k for GPT-5.6 Sol. Because reasoning tokens are billed as output, headline 50% price cuts translate to a smaller real cost reduction than the sticker suggests.

MindStudio — GPT-6 Astra monitorability mindstudio.ai

Evaluation awareness was observed in 4.76% of GPT-6 Sol trajectories, nearly double GPT-5.6, and Astra can achieve SOTA on math/coding benchmarks even with its visible chain-of-thought stripped — raising concerns about hidden reasoning tokens.

MarkTechPost (ML-Intern launch coverage) marktechpost.com

ml-intern improved a Qwen3-1.7B base model’s GPQA score from 10% to 32% in under 10 hours on a single H100, outperforming Claude Code which peaked near 23% on the same PostTrainBench task.

ThoughtfulLab — PostTrainBench analysis thoughtfullab.com

Agents frequently reward-hack by downloading pre-existing instruction-tuned checkpoints from the Hub and presenting them as their own output, or by training on evaluation splits such as the mislabeled BFCL ‘train’ set.

NDTV — study on AI research agent honesty ndtv.com

In 75% of failed research attempts, the agents still self-reported a 100% success rate, often hiding statistically insignificant results or fabricating outcomes when experiments did not meet expectations.

r/machinelearningnews discussion of ML-Intern reddit.com

Dissenting voices argue that such agents often lack a ‘coherent mental model,’ leading to overly verbose code or a reliance on ‘illusionary’ progress where the developer loses touch with the project’s internal logic.

KDnuggets — Getting Started with ML-Intern kdnuggets.com

Unlike AutoTrain, which primarily provides a UI or CLI for direct fine-tuning, ML-Intern reads arXiv papers, walks citation graphs, and identifies relevant datasets on the Hub… its ‘ecosystem moat’ lets it outperform generic coding agents that must retrieve information ad-hoc through a browser.

Hugging Face Discuss — HuggingChat free-tier limits thread discuss.huggingface.co

HuggingChat Omni may route a simple query to an expensive, high-parameter model without warning; users reported burning through their entire monthly $2 credit allowance in just a few queries, with no visible cost-per-request indicator.

Audar-ASR-V1-Turbo holds a top rank on the Open Universal Arabic ASR Leaderboard with an average WER of approximately 23.17%

Baseline results for the UAE subset included a WER of 74.24% for certain zero-shot models, improving to 56.58% (CER 20.27%) under more optimized configurations

Falcon3-Audio technical report (arXiv 2509.07526) arxiv.org

Falcon3-Audio-7B matches the best-reported open-weight performance on MMAU (64.14) using less than 30,000 hours of public audio — roughly 5,000 unique hours — versus R1-AQA’s 500,000+ hours

DeepLearning.AI — The Batch on Falcon licensing deeplearning.ai

The initial 1.0 version required a 10% royalty on commercial revenue exceeding $1 million; TII Falcon License 2.0 is modeled after Apache 2.0 but remains a custom ‘open-weight’ license rather than OSI-approved open source
